All these elements have influenced the use and/or lack of use of Spanish Golden Age verse to date. We will examine the circumstances that have made this artistic journey possible, from structural beauty to the authenticity of the action.

About Pepa Pedroche

Pepa Pedroche is a graduate of the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Madrid. She holds a degree in Dramatic Arts and Production, with a specialism in Classical Theatre and Theatre of the Spanish Golden Age.

Since 2001 she has been working with the CNTC (National Classical Theatre Company) as an actress and advisor on stage direction and verse. Since 2011 she has leveraged her acting experience to launch a successful teaching career. Here are some recent highlights:

She now teaches Classical Theatre and Verse at Nebrija University, Madrid.
In 2019 she was appointed as a specialist teacher of Verse at the Fundación de la Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Castilla y León, Valladolid.
In 2022 she directed and staged “Príncipes contra monstruos” at the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro Clásico de Alcalá de Henares, and “Oliva” at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Almagro.

Los acontecimientos históricos y sociales han marcado, a lo largo de la historia, la evolución teatral que refleja dichos actos, tanto en las dramaturgias textuales como en el hecho escénico. Las necesidades de la representación también han necesitado la adecuación de los espacios que la acogían para desarrollar la eficacia de la comunicación entre actor/espectador. Todos estos elementos han influido en el uso y/o el desuso del verso del Siglo de Oro español hasta hoy. Haremos un recorrido por las circunstancias que han hecho posible este camino artístico entre la belleza estructural y la verosimilitud de la acción.

Licenciada en Arte Dramático y titulada en Producción por la Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Madrid, se especializa en Teatro Clásico y teatro del Siglo de Oro español.

Desde el año 2001 colabora con la CNTC como actriz, asesora de verso y dirección. Desde 2011, compagina su actividad profesional con la docencia:

En la Universidad Nebrija es profesora de Teatro Clásico y Verso.
En la Fundación de la Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Castilla y León es contratada como profesora especialista en Verso en el 2019.
En 2022, dirige y estrena en el Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro Clásico de Alcalá de Henares “Príncipes contra monstruos”, así como “Oliva” en el Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Almagro.

Brief Description

The responsibility to create a good story is so great that over the years I have invented tricks to fool my mind, which will otherwise block reject any ideas. One day I read that the brain cells that we use to remember things are the same ones we use to imagine things, and a light bulb went off in my head. Pretending they are memories helps lift the responsibility off one’s own shoulders. I put all my effort into discovering what actually happened, so that I can understand why things, why life, are as they are now.

Brief Description

This is a talk about an approach, intended to provide the rationale behind producing a version of King Lear entitled Queen Lear.
By way of an appetiser, it might be said that my social commitment relating to a non-violent aesthetic makes me want to revise certain classics, as part of a team of creatives who all feel the same need.
Some of the ideas discussed in this talk are:
Social responsibility rather than evolution. The ecology movement: what world do we live in? What is our responsibility? Culture as a means of transformation. Awareness of our own behaviour. Death as a way of transitioning to a new life. The apparent diminution of virtue. The search for other ways of life inspired by a classic . . .

Se trata de un acercamiento, una charla que pretende dar las ideas del porqué de una versión de King Lear llamada Queen Lear.

A modo de aperitivo, se puede decir que el compromiso social que tengo sobre la estética no violenta hace que quiera revisar ciertos clásicos, junto a un equipo de creadores que sentimos una misma necesidad.

Algunas ideas que se barajan en esta charla son:

Civismo más que evolución. Ecologismo, ¿en qué mundo vivimos? ¿cuál es nuestra responsabilidad? La cultura como posibilidad transformadora. La conciencia sobre nuestros actos. La muerte como manera de dar paso a una nueva vida. La minoría aparente del bien. La búsqueda de otras formas de vida sugeridas a través de un clásico…

Brief Description

Talk-discussion with the directors of the people’s production of Fuenteovejuna 2022, in
Fuente Obejuna (Córdoba, España). This is one of the longest-established people’s
productions in Spain, performed by the residents of the village that inspired Lope de Vega to
write his famous comedy. Staged in the village square and involving more than 200
performers, this play is about one village’s rebellion against tyranny.

Charla-coloquio con los directores de la representación popular de Fuenteovejuna 2022 en Fuente Obejuna (Córdoba, España). Una de las representaciones populares con más tradición de España interpretada por los habitantes de la villa que inspiró a Lope de Vega a escribir su famosa comedia. Representada en la plaza del pueblo y que ha contado con más de 200 personas, esta obra trata sobre la rebelión de un pueblo contra la tiranía.

• We will work on the analysis, delivery and performance of dramatic texts written in verse.
• We will analyse dramatic elements within Spanish Golden Age texts.
• We will connect historical characters with timeless passions and conflicts.

How will I benefit from this workshop?

As actors, a working knowledge of dramatic texts written in verse is priceless. Not only does it serve as a means to develop vital skills as performers, it also serves to open up our horizons to new theatrical genres. In addition, it equips us with a better grip of the spoken word, which strengthens our abilities on stage as well as on screen.

• This workshop will be delivered in Spanish.
• It will be split across two sessions, taking place on two consecutive days:
• Session 1: Monday 12th December, 13:00 – 17:00
• Session 2: Tuesday 13th December, 10:00 – 13:00
• A preparation session will also take place on Wednesday 30th November, via Zoom (time TBD). In this session, Pepa will share the texts that will be discussed / worked on during the workshop. It will also serve as an opportunity for participants to meet each other virtually, ahead of the workshop.

• Se trabajará el análisis y la interpretación de textos dramáticos escritos en verso.
• Analizaremos los elementos dramatúrgicos.
• Conectaremos a los personajes de ayer con las pasiones y conflictos de siempre.

¿Cómo me beneficiará este taller?

Como intérpretes, el trabajo sobre textos dramáticos escritos en verso es valiosísimo. Por un lado, es una vía para desarrollar nuestras capacidades y aptitudes interpretativas, y por otro, es una manera de abrir horizontes hacia otros géneros teatrales. También nos proporciona un dominio de la palabra que no enriquece tanto en el trabajo en escena como frente a la cámara.

• Habrá una reunión previa por Zoom el miércoles 30 noviembre en la cual la profesora entregará los textos con los que se trabajarán. Además, esta reunión servirá para presentar el curso y conocerse antes del taller en Diciembre.

About Ricardo Madrigal

Ricardo Madrigal is the co-founder of the Ministry of Clown, a theatre company that won 2021’s FesTeLOFF’s jury prize. Ricardo trained in physical theatre at Fourth Monkey, London, and continued his studies focusing on Clown with practitioners such as Phillipe Gaulier, Aitor Basauri, and Stephen Sobal. Ricardo currently collaborates with the FesTeLon team.

Sinopsis

Nuestro clown es nuestro alter ego idiota, optimista, resistente, vulnerable y que encuentra un inmenso placer en todo lo que hace. La exploración del clown aporta al actor la capacidad de estar presente en el escenario, así como una relación generosa con el público y sus compañeros. En este taller daremos los primeros pasos para intentar encontrar a este idiota.

¿A quién va dirigido?

A cualquier persona con interés en ser un estúpido, a los que quieren hacer las cosas bien pero son los peores alumnos de la clase.

Conocimiento previo de la materia no es necesario.

Este taller es por adultos.

Dirigido por

Ricardo Madrigal es el co-fundador del Ministry of Clown, compañía ganadora del FesTeLOFF 2021. Se entrenó en teatro físico en Londres, en Fourth Monkey y continuó sus estudios enfocados al Clown con artistas como Phillipe Gaulier, Aitor Basauri, o Stephen Sobal. En la actualidad colabora con el equipo de FesTeLon.
