WORKSHOPS 1 & 2

WORKSHOP #1: Introduction to Spanish Classical Theatre and Verse by Paula Rodriguez from ‘Teatro Inverso’
TIME: 11.15 – 12.45
Brief description
This workshop is an introduction to Spanish Classical Theatre through the works of one of it’s most significant authors; Pedro Calderon de la Barca.
The course is an introductory level and no particular skills are needed. Please bring a notebook and pen if you wish to take notes.
This session will take place in Spanish with an English interpreter.
WORKSHOP #2: Training for Actors; Bodily Poetics. Run by Paula Rodriguez
TIME: 13.15 – 14.45
Brief Description
This workshop is an introduction to the physical and vocal training called: Bodily poetics, developed by our theatre company “Teatro Inverso”. Our method explores how to find the connection with words through physicality when working as actors with classical text.
This is an introductory workshops but previous acting training is needed (any level from beginners to BA students to professional actors or directors). Bring comfortable clothes.

This workshop is about exploring basic movement skills and how to develop them.

WORKSHOP #4: Architecture Within Theatre: Objects and People by Luis Amália
TIME: 11.00 – 13.00
Brief Description
The workshop is about creating an ensemble theatre piece exploring the ebb and flow of a common living space, because architecture is the theatre or our lives.
No previous acting skills are required. Open to people willing to listen and create a collective piece of theatre. Just bring yourself and your ideas!

WORKSHOP #5: Theatre of the Oppressed: An Introduction to Image and Newspaper Theatre by María Estevez-Serrano and Diego Ludicissa

Brief description
Over the course of the two workshops Maria and Diego will introduce some of the main Theatre of the Oppressed techniques Image Theatre, Newspaper Theatre and Forum Theatre. You will explore these techniques and their main objectives.
You will need to wear comfortable clothes to move around in, and a pen and paper.
This session will take place in Spanish with an English interpreter.

Brief Description
This workshop is an introductory course on the concept of ‘Dramatic Structure’ developed by Argentine director Raul Serrano, and based Stanislavski’s Method of Physical Actions.
Loose clothing should be worn. Please bring a bottle of water, a notebook, and a pen.

The workshop will focus on translating Spanish-language plays into English.

Brief Description
The Golden Age is one of the most florid moments in poetic and theatrical rhetoric in the history of humanity. Only profound knowledge of Spanish Baroque verse, as well as knowledge on the philosophies and ideological realities of its context, will allow one to interpret and understand Baroque texts from a contemporary perspective. Taking Calderon’s ‘Life is a Dream’ as a starting point, Ignacio García, Director of Almagro International Festival of Classical Theatre, will take us on a brief journey from text to contemporary staging.

WORKSHOP: Introduction to Understanding and Interpreting Spanish Golden Age Theatre

Brief Description
The term Siglo de Oro (Golden Age) is used to describe the Early Modern period in Spain, a time of extraordinary artistic flowering. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries saw a monumental increase in the production of live theatre, and it was in this period where Spanish culture brought a crop like no other in terms of dramatic genius. This workshop, led by José Bornas, aims to introduce those who are interested, to Spanish Golden Age theatre and will cover a range of topics including playwrights of the time, staging, texts, characters, the public, relevant themes and many more.

Brief Description
Jesús Torres will lead a workshop aimed at young people who are interested in Spanish Classical Theatre. In this practical workshop, Torres will focus on a few scenes from Spanish Golden Age theatre and will explore verse and staging in an exciting and interesting way. He will also teach those interested how to apply didactic tools from classical theatre to a classroom and how to use classical works to talk about relevant topics.

Brief Description
Novels, through lying, express a curious truth, which can only be expressed in a veiled and concealed fashion, masquerading as what it is not. The talk by director Eusebio Lazaro, deals with fiction and representation, and will touch on topics including the beginnings of oral and written literature, the narration of myth, mimesis and theatre becoming an independent genre.

TALK: The Other Generation of ‘27
COMPANY/SPEAKER: El Vodevil. Susana Hernández

Brief Description
Pedro Salinas, Vicente Aleixandre, Jorge Guillén, Federico García Lorca and Rafael Alberti Merello are probably the most well-known members of the Generation of ’27 but there was another Generation of ’27 that was almost eclipsed by the first. Susana Hernández will talk about the latter which included Antonio de Lara (Tono), Miguel Mihura, Jardiel Poncela, Edgar Neville, José López Rubio and K-Hito, who revived the foundations of humour in theatre and cinema.
